Traditions
Throughout the
year Covenant holds events that our members look forward to each
year. Keep your eye on the church calendar to be ready when
these events pop up.
Gathering of Greens –
typically the first Sunday afternoon in December (weather
permitting). We get together and go out and gather items to
create Christmas wreaths for the Sanctuary.
Baby Jesus – kicks off on the
first Sunday in December. A doll representing Baby Jesus is
presented to a family during the morning worship service along
with a journal. Baby Jesus stays with the family for a day
usually going with a family member wherever they go. Family
members may write their thoughts and observations about their
time with Baby Jesus in the journal. After about 24 hours the
receiving family chooses the next family to receive baby Jesus
and they pass Him along. This continues until Christmas Eve
when whoever has Baby Jesus brings him to the Candlelight
service and returns him to the manger.
Christmas Cards - Each Christmas season the church office
produces a listing of all of the families in the church to help
you in filling out Christmas cards. You can save on
postage by delivering them to the Christmas card box in the main
hallway. Place your card in the appropriate cubby and
check the cubby where your cards should be to retrieve your
Christmas cards.
Live Nativity – For 3 or 4
nights during the Christmas season volunteers dress up in
costumes and head out to the stable set up near the highway.
Christmas Eve Candlelight
Service – 11:00 P.M. Christmas Eve night we get together listen
to Christmas music, participate in communion, and sing silent
night by candlelight. It’s OK to bring the kids in the PJ’s and
Santa won’t mind if they are out that late!!
New Year’s Eve Fellowship –
8:00 P.M. – Midnight New Year’s Eve - bring your leftover
Christmas snacks and board games. Have a few hours of fun and
fellowship as the year winds down. If you aren’t into the
games, then you can help take down the Christmas decorations.
Valentine Fellowship – An
evening of food and fun usually highlighted by playing the newly
/ oldey wed game.
Easter Sunrise Service –
Celebrate the joy of Easter as dawn breaks over the mountains.
We know it’s early, so it’s OK to put off taking a shower and
putting on makeup until the late service.
Easter Breakfast – Following
Sunrise Service the men serve a hearty breakfast.
Ladies Banquet – The men are
honored to serve a fine meal to the ladies of the church. There
is normally a guest speaker and pictures are usually taken for a
nominal fee.
Viola Valley Homecoming – The
ladies of the church operate a fried pie booth in order to raise
money to cover the cost of their annual fall retreat. Pie
making lessons are offered in the weeks leading up to this
event.
Warren County A&L Fair – It’s
the biggest event in Warren County each year and of course we
are there. The church operates an information booth under the
grandstand that provides a cold drink of water as well as
information about our ministries. In addition Covenant Academy
operates a Food Booth at the Fair. It’s always easy to find
something to do around Fair time.
Ladies Retreat – During the
fall each year the ladies rent a couple of cabins at Rock Island
State Park and take some time for fellowship and to work on
crafts.
Harvest Carnival – Held in
late October each year giving the kids a chance to wear their
costumes, play games, and get some candy all while helping to
support Covenant’s Food Box program.
Ladies Christmas Closet – a
craft fair for women put on by women.
Meals on Wheels – On the
Saturday after Thanksgiving Covenant provides turkey and all the
trimming’s to the participants in Warren Co.’s Meals-on-Wheels
program.
